In May 2026, I checked into the Club Balcony Room at The Sukhothai Bangkok. Nestled within Bangkok’s upscale and leafy Sathorn district, the 210-room luxury hotel is situated near Lumphini Park, the emerging One Bangkok mixed-use development as well as the vibrant Silom dining and nightlife scene. Both Lumphini MRT Station and Sala Daeng BTS Station are around 10 minutes away on foot, while Suvarnabhumi Airport is less than an hour away by car on a smooth traffic day.

Nearby hotels include Banyan Tree Bangkok, W Bangkok, Shangri-La Bangkok, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River, Capella Bangkok, Sindhorn Kempinski Hotel Bangkok, and The St. Regis Bangkok.

A boutique luxury brand founded in 1991, The Sukhothai Hotels & Resorts (the word means “the dawn of happiness” in Sanskrit) is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) and has two flagship properties, The Sukhothai Bangkok and The Sukhothai Shanghai.

Best for: Design-conscious luxury travellers, club lounge and wellness enthusiasts, those who seek a tranquil and resort-style retreat.

The must-dos (if any): Spend time in the saltwater pool, take a stroll around the landscaped and lotus-filled gardens, enjoy breakfast and evening cocktails at the Sukhothai Club Wing.

THE SUKHOTHAI BANGKOK

Designed by renowned architect Ed Tuttle (behind Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme as well as many Aman properties, including Amanjiwo and the legendary Amanpuri), The Sukhothai Bangkok departs from the glossy, modern skyscraper aesthetic of many Bangkok luxury hotels, instead unfolding across six acres of tranquil courtyards, pavilion-like spaces, lotus ponds and reflective water features inspired by Thailand’s ancient Sukhothai Kingdom. The 210-room labyrinthine property – comprising the Main Wing which houses most of the hotel’s F&B and retail concepts as well as the Sukhothai Club Wing where the club lounge and wellness amenities are situated – combines contemporary luxury with traditional Thai design elements, from Buddha statues, Khmer-style carvings and chedi-inspired sculptures to extensive use of teakwood, silk and bronze. Arrival at the Main Wing is suitably theatrical: the soaring, mirror-lined lobby of the creates a striking infinity effect,  while the gentle melodies of a live khim – a traditional Thai hammered dulcimer – lend the welcome an almost ceremonial sense of calm.

The sense of retreat extends to the hotel’s wellness facilities. A 25-metre saltwater pool, lined with sun loungers and cabanas, forms the centrepiece of the Sukhothai Club Wing’s grounds, while the ginormous 24-hour fitness studio offers state-of-the-art equipment alongside a hot tub, steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi. Housed within beautifully restored golden teak houses dating to the King Rama V era, The Sukhothai Spa features treatment suites with whirlpool baths, steam rooms and hammams, complemented by beauty and yoga studios.

CLUB BALCONY ROOM

Set within the Sukhothai Club Wing, the 66sqm Club Balcony King boasts a spacious sheltered terrace with a sun lounger and dining table with views of the swimming pool and gardens. (I was told that the roof used to be fully retractable at the touch of the button near the balcony door, but the function appears to have been disabled.) Playing it all idyllic urban resort, the room features teakwood furnishings, ornate wall artefacts and a muted earthy colour palette with flashes of celadon accents. An indoor daybed provides lounging opportunities sans sun, while a desk caters to those who need to catch up on work (although you really shouldn’t).

The pantry comprises Nespresso coffee as well as premium Saro Royal Lotus teas, while the minibar is stocked with snacks, wines, canned drinks, beers as well as baby bottles of spirits. Upon check-in, I was greeted by a variety of welcome amenities, including chocolate cigars, macarons and fresh apples.

A walk-in wardrobe connects you to a cavernous bathroom – made to feel more vast with its expanse of mirrored surfaces – with a Japanese bidet toilet, an enclosed rainfall shower, an ensuite bathtub as well as two separate vanities. Bathroom amenities are courtesy of perfume house Diptyque and luxury Thai wellness and fragrance brand Panpuri.

Breakfast is served at Colonnade, the hotel’s international buffet restaurant in the Main Wing. The spread comprises the usual pastries, juices and egg station alongside a variety of Japanese and other Asian dishes such as Seafood Maki, Vegetable Maki, Pan-fried Atlantic Salmon, Japanese Egg Custard, Vegetable Gyoza, Chicken Gyoza, Dim Sum, Claypot Vermicelli, Chicken Soup Noodle and Chicken Green Curry.

The hotel offers two elevated dining experiences. Set within a pavilion next to the Main Wing, the elegant Thai restaurant Celadon serves classic local dishes accompanied by traditional Thai dance performances, while the Italian fine dining restaurant La Scala in the Sukhothai Club Wing boasts an open kitchen and an extensive wine list.

Elsewhere, the Pool Terrace Cafe & Bar in the Sukhothai Club Wing serves light bites and various health drinks, while the Main Wing houses the Lobby Salons which offer themed afternoon tea experiences; lounge and cocktail bar Zuk Bar; and retail and cafe space Thimian

CLUB LOUNGE

Located within the Sukhothai Club Wing, the Club Lounge offers breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktail presentations. The club comprises a long gallery of distinct spaces, with the buffet spread on one end; a relaxed, living room-style setting anchored by sofas and a television at the other; and window-side seating as well as private booth-style enclaves in between.

Breakfast is presented in a semi-buffet format, with selected dishes from Colonnade making an appearance in the buffet (Claypot Vermicelli and Chicken Green Curry) alongside a variety of a la minute options – think Sukhothai Noodle Soup, Phad Si-Ew (wok-fried fresh flat rice noodles with black soya sauce with your choice of chicken breast, pork tenderloin, beef tenderloin, Andaman seafood or white prawns), Khao Neaw Moo Ping (grilled marinated pork neck, sticky rice), Hainanese Chicken Rice (poached free-range chicken, chicken broth, chilli ginger soy sauce) and Japanese Breakfast (grilled Atlantic salmon teriyaki).

The evening cocktail presentation offers nightly themed menus, and I managed to catch the Indian and Chinese-themed spreads during my stay – think Butter Chicken, Tikka Masala, Pani Puri, Chaat Salad, Falafe Wrap, Stir-fried Chicken Sichuan Sauce, Hot Sour Soup, Fried Chive Dumpling, Mini Bun with Pork BBQ, Jellyfish Salad and Stir-fried Seafood with XO Sauce. The Sticky Toffee Pudding – available on both evenings – was an indulgently rich and moist delight, while the Banana Sorbet and Black Sesame Ice Cream were icy treats available to soothe parched throats.

In terms of booze, the menu includes The Sukhothai-branded white (sauvignon blanc) and red (shiraz grenache) wines alongside classic cocktails such as Negroni, Old Fashioned, Moscow Mule and Daiquiri as well as their signature Thai Collins (Vodka Ketel One-infused lemongrass, lime, bee pollen syrup, tonic syrup).

CONCLUSION

The Sukhothai Bangkok remains one of the Thai capital’s most distinctive luxury hotels. While newer properties compete with ever-taller towers, larger rooms and increasingly extravagant facilities, the hotel quietly sticks to what it has always done best: thoughtful architecture, timeless Thai design and an atmosphere of genuine serenity. The lush, expansive low-rise compounds feel remarkably secluded for a hotel in Bangkok’s central business district, while the gardens, reflective pools and historic teakwood spa create a resort-like experience that few city hotels can replicate.

A time-honoured grand dame, yet surprisingly underrated.
