In May 2026, I checked into the Deluxe King at Varel Singapore, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel. Standing on the former Selegie Centre site, the 128-room Marriott Bonvoy property is located along the edge of the Bras Basah-Bugis arts district, with Little India, Bugis, and Bras Basah all within easy walking distance. Popular destinations nearby include the buzzy cafe Apartment Coffee as well as Fortune Centre, one of Singapore’s best-known foodie hubs. Both Rochor and Little India MRT Stations are around 5 minutes away on foot, while Singapore Changi Airport is around 20 minutes away by car.
Other Marriott Bonvoy properties in Singapore include The Singapore EDITION, The St. Regis Singapore, Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel, JW Marriott Singapore South Beach, The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, 21 Carpenter Singapore, The Warehouse Hotel and The Westin Singapore.
Best for: Design-conscious travellers, Marriott Bonvoy loyalists, balcony room lovers, staycationers seeking a boutique hotel experience in a unique location close to an abundance of glorious food options.
The must-dos (if any): Enjoy breakfast (and dinner) at Hathaway Autograph, drop by the reception lobby for complimentary Denzy Gelato, take a dip in the rooftop infinity pool, take advantage of the complimentary access to the nearby double-storey gym Snap Fitness Prinsep Street, explore the food options nearby (Fortune Centre is a must!).
VAREL SINGAPORE, A TRIBUTE PORTFOLIO HOTEL
Designed by architectural firm FDAT (who also designed Pan Pacific Singapore and PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay), the newly-built boutique hotel features interiors which pay tribute to local heritage, culture and traditions, from the saga seed sculpture near the hotel driveway and the five stones-inspired sofa seating in the lobby to the abacus-like partitions set along signature restaurant Hathaway Autograph’s terrace seating area. Guest rooms are varied in layout and presented through two distinct colour palettes (day and night), which gives you plenty of reason to return for a different stay experience. Verdant sky terraces on selected floors and spacious guest balconies provide a resort feel, with the guest room corridors bearing a distinct floral scent courtesy of collaborative perfumery house Maison21G.
In terms of wellness, the hotel offers a tranquil rooftop infinity pool which is open until 10pm daily. While there is no on-site fitness centre, guests enjoy complimentary access to the double-storey gym Snap Fitness Prinsep Street less than 10 minutes away.
I was impressed by the generous complimentary offerings extended to guests throughout the stay, from the TWG iced tea and scoops from local brand Denzy Gelato served upon check-in to the daily artisanal coffee redeemable from ground level cafe Vernacular Coffee.

DELUXE KING
Decked in wood textures with shades of cream, orange and midnight blue, the 30sqm Deluxe King boasts a large balcony with daybeds on each end and automated blinds that can be lowered to convert the area into loungeable space. The bedroom is fitted with a low-profile platform bed as well as a curved desk and upholstered stools which soften the geometry of the room. The complimentary minibar is stocked with non-alcoholic beverages, while the pantry offers both TWG tea and house-branded drop coffee.
The bathroom features a full-height window which fills the cosy space with energizing rays of natural light, with a beautiful gate partition with a distinctive geometric lattice design which references traditional shophouse iron grille gates. Brass fixtures in the shower area add a sense of stylish elegance to the proceedings, while the perfumed bathroom amenities are courtesy of collaborative perfumery house Maison21G.
Pro tip: you may want to avoid rooming with your mother during your stay. The semi-opaque frosted glass between the shower and bedroom turns the act of bathing into performative spectacle, with blurred contours and silhouettes visible from the bedroom giving strong, voyeuristic, Tate McRae in Sports Car-esque vibes.

DINING
Breakfast is served at Hathaway Autograph, the all-day dining venue specialising in modern Southeast Asian cuisine with both indoor and alfresco seating. The buffet spread comprised dishes such as Lotus Glutinous Rice, Prawn Dumpling, Chicken Siew Mai, Kueh Lapis and Sesame Balls. The Nasi Lemak with accompanying Fried Chicken and Fried Meat Rolls was suitably scrumptious with an appealing anchovy-laden sambal chilli and the Mee Soto displayed an urgent, passionate intensity, but my favourite was the Roti Prata with Dahl Curry, all pillowy shred-ready and buttery pleasures abound.

Dinner at Hathaway Autograph was a riotous international fun-fair of flavours. The Heritage Kueh Pie Tee with Shrimp managed to keep its shell armour crisp and intact whilst containing a heavy radish wetness within, while the Otah Otah Mousse was bodaciously spicy. The Salmon & Coconut Kinilaw (Filipino style ceviche, citrus cured salmon, coconut milk, avocado, sweet potato crisps) was chunkily portioned and coated in sweet coconut creaminess with a flirtatious tease of chilli padi heat, while the Gai Galae (southern Thai style grilled chicken with aromatic coconut curry glaze) was a chunky and sexily smokily affair.
The Hathaway’s Chicken Rice (cold-poached anxin chicken, fragrant broth rice, ginger scallion & chilli dip) featured a fragrant rice commendable for its firmness and ginger-tinged bite as well as a comforting vegetable soup, with the headlining tender chicken resting in a thick, soy sauce and sesame oil-tinged glaze. The Signature Beef Cheek Rawon (12-hour slow braised angus beef cheek in buah keluek beef gravy) was a thick, umami, hearty and lip-coating phenomenon, while the delectably moist Bebek Goreng Berempah (fried local spiced duck leg confit) was served with a pulut hitam-esque blue pea coconut and Thai berries rice. The ingredient-laden Laksa – a more basic version is available on rotation during breakfast – boasted an alluringly rich, sediment-heavy broth, with the sambal chilli from the morning Nasi Lemak making a return.
The Sticky Date Pudding and Princess Of The Straits (puteri salat, aromatic pengat sauce with salted gula jawa ice cream) ended the hearty meal on a slap own belly-tastic satisfied note.

Located on the lobby level, Saga Bar doubles as both the hotel’s cosy cocktail bar as well as the venue for evening cocktails and canapes for guests with club lounge privileges. During club hours, beverage offerings include Australian wines, beers as well as Gin Highball and Cape Codder cocktails, served together with a rotational platter of high-quality canapes from Hathaway Autograph’s kitchen.
Rounding up the list of F&B concepts is ground-level cafe Vernacular Coffee, which now serves as the artisanal café’s flagship outpost (they have another outlet along Guillemard Road).

CONCLUSION
Rich with local references yet refreshingly free of heritage-hotel stuffiness, Varel Singapore combines thoughtful design, spacious balcony-equipped rooms and a surprisingly generous roster of complimentary perks into a package that feels considerably more premium than its positioning suggests. Between the rooftop infinity pool, excellent dining at Hathaway Autograph and a location that places some of Singapore’s most vibrant neighbourhoods within easy reach, this feels more than your average Tribute Portfolio hotel.
Feels like a Tribute Portfolio+ property.
