| Why you should | Marriott Bonvoy Suite Night Awards (SNAs) do work here – my entry room booking was upgraded to the 138sqm Caroline Astor Suite which boasted a cavernous living room with work desk, dining table and sofa area; a marble bathroom with Laboratoire Remède shower amenities as well as a freestanding bathtub offering lake garden views; and an actual massage room fitted with a massage bed (?!).
Breakfast at The Brasserie was exceptional, and easily one of the best luxury hotel breakfasts in the city. The buffet goes well beyond the usual international spread, with Nasi Lemak, Ayam Goreng Berempah, Nasi Dagang Kelantan With Gulai Ikan Tongkol, Kacang Pool (spiced fava beans with spices and minced beef, served with fried runny egg), Oxtail Soup, Sambal Sotong and an assortment of Kuih Muih making appearances. Then there is the à la minute menu, where a touch of old-world St. Regis glamour comes through in the form of Signature Poached Eggs With Garlic Crème, Truffle & Mushrooms On Chawanmushi, Canadian Lobster With Eggs and The Brasserie Steak & Eggs (Australian tenderloin, fried free range eggs, truffle mashed potato, rocket leaves, beef jus), with the Steamed Sui Gao (steamed dumplings served in nyonya assam sauce & garlic oil) bringing on sultry Asian exoticism with its unexpected fusion filling. |
| Why you shouldn’t |
We did get the SNA upgrade, but the suite was only ready more than an hour past the guaranteed 3pm check-in timing. There is an absence of complimentary wellness facilities beyond the gym and swimming pool. There is no hot tub on site, while private sauna access is chargeable. The location is also not particularly exciting, with little immediately around the hotel to entice you beyond its own four walls. While KL Sentral is technically nearby, the walk to the station is noticeably longer than from the neighbouring Hilton or Le Méridien, making the hotel slightly less convenient if you intend to use the station as your base for exploring the city. |
| Miscellaneous information | The complimentary Violet Hour cocktail at Astor Bar for Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite members and above seems to be a little-known (and little publicised) benefit. |
