The UTW (“Under Ten Words”): Laidback second-storey Peranakan-inspired bar with a dose of naughty funk.

The must-orders (if any): Tuna Tartare Bruschettas, Respite

Summary: The group behind Taiwanese bar concept Five Ten launches a Peranakan-inspired bar along Boat Quay, named after their mother. It’s all purple paint-splattered walls, watermelon floats and cheeky cocktail ideas in this laidback, funky joint, and the drinks range from the Hello Kitty (e.g. the frothy Murmurs in Purple) to the potent (e.g. Respite). The food selection – including Five Ten’s signature braised pork rice bowl – is currently small, but expected to expand. Prices are nett.

The bourbon-based Respite ($15).

Murmurs in Purple - Bee Bee'sThe gin-based Murmurs in Purple ($15).

Tuna Tartare Bruschettas - Bee Bee'sThe mother spicy, poké on toast-esque Tuna Tartare Bruschettas, which are “spiced with ginger flower, basil and more Peranakan favourites” ($7).

Grade: High B3, but has promise as a comfortable and affordable chill-out spot once the food menu is developed more fully.
