In November 2025, I checked into the Premier Suite at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel. Situated in the heart of the Orchard Road shopping and entertainment district, the 403-room property is housed within the same Tang Plaza complex as the popular upscale TANGS department store and an underpass away from Orchard MRT Station and major shopping destinations such as ION Orchard, Isetan and Ngee Ann City. Changi Airport is about 40 minutes away and the Central Business District 4 MRT stations away, while it takes less than 20 minutes to reach Marina Bay Sands.

Other notable hotels within the same vicinity include Grand Hyatt Singapore, The St. Regis Singapore, The Singapore EDITION, Conrad Singapore Orchard, Pan Pacific Orchard, voco Orchard Singapore, Four Seasons Hotel Singapore, Shangri-La Hotel Singapore, The Standard, Singapore as well as Artyzen Singapore.

Other Marriott Bonvoy properties in Singapore include JW Marriott Singapore South Beach, The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, 21 Carpenter Singapore, The Warehouse Hotel and W Singapore.

The UTW (“Under Ten Words”): Oasis calm in the heart of Orchard Road.

The must-dos (if any): Take a dip in the swimming pool; enjoy cocktails at the M Club lounge; have breakfast at Crossroads Cafe; dine and shop at TANGS department store.

SINGAPORE MARRIOTT TANG PLAZA HOTEL

Boasting a striking green-tiled octagonal pagoda roof as well as eye-catching red colonnades, the architecturally stunning 30-storey building soars dramatically into the skies above the bustling Orchard district, unabashedly Oriental in persuasion and stubbornly defying the Orchard Road template of urban modernity. Whilst being one of the older properties in the area (the property served as the Dynasty Hotel in 1982 before being converted to a Marriott property in 1995), the hotel has since undergone various refurbishments throughout the years to keep things fresh, having concluded one round of extensive room renovations as well as a revamp of their executive lounge concept a few years ago.

The hotel boasts a variety of dining concepts, most of which are situated on the ground level: all-day dining buffet restaurant Crossroads Cafe; Chinese restaurant Wan Hao; speakeasy bar The Other Room; and afternoon tea destination Lobby Lounge as well as takeaway concept Java+. Tenant restaurants include Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant Ginza Sushi-Ichi and Japanese tempura restaurant Ginza Tenharu.

On the wellness front, a well-equipped fitness centre and half-size basketball court provide opportunities for working out a good sweat before cooling off in the swimming pool, one of the highlights of the property. The swimming pool is fitted with jacuzzi jets along one end and surrounded by private cabanas, sun loungers and the various Pool Terrace rooms in manner of idyllic resort or similar (right smack in the heart of Orchard Road, no less). The experience of sunbathing along the shallow edge of the pool with my eyes closed as I let myself get lost in the resort calm of it all was glorious – not since my stay at Raffles Hotel Singapore have I encountered a Singapore swimming pool which offered such a rejuvenating city oasis experience.

PREMIER SUITE

Set within a gated compound directly next to the swimming pool, the 60sqm Premier Suite’s most notable feature is its verandah with outdoor pavilion as well as private whirlpool fitted with powerful massage jets. One should still dress and behave modestly though, as the outdoor area is not entirely private – the gate is perched at such a modest height that I can gaze out upon the pool, and the verandah is within view of the surveillance cameras monitoring the pool area.

The suite’s barrel vault ceiling makes the space feel impressively spacious, while plantation shutters permit some natural light in for a hazy and lazy resort feel. The minibar is stocked with wines, bottled water and beer as well as canned drinks, while the pantry offers Lavazza coffee and TWG tea-making facilities. The minibar is tucked away in one corner of the suite along with an old-fashioned wooden carrel desk, while separate coffee and dining table areas cater to different styles of social activities. The open-concept bathroom connects dual vanities, a deep soaking tub and a spacious walk-in shower area in a seamless loop, with the shower area wide enough to accommodate five men standing in a row…but with only one modestly-sized shower head. Shower amenities are courtesy of beauty brand This Works.

When I checked into the room, I was greeted by welcome amenities on the coffee table as well as a lovely hand-drawn greeting on the mirror wall featuring a colourful drawing of the hotel’s distinctive exterior, which left a smile on my face because of the greeting’s unabashed cheeriness.

Premier Suite guests have access to the poolside M Club lounge on the same level.

DINING

Breakfast is served at Crossroads Cafe, the all-day international buffet restaurant located on the ground level with a streetside al fresco space for casual fare and beers. The buffet spread comprises choices such as cold cuts and cheeses; fresh fruits and juices; Western breakfast sides, a waffle station and an omelette station; breads and pastries such as French Toast, Hazelnut Chocolate Danish, Cinnamon Danish and Lemon Muffin; Asian specialties such as Lotus Leaf Glutinous Rice with Chicken, Baked Chicken Char Siew Soh, Roasted Duck Congee, Nasi Goreng Istimewa and Mutton Rendang; and a noodle station with your choice of noodle and soup base (e.g. Laksa) paired with a Yong Tau Foo-esque array of ingredients such as vegetables, fish cake, fried meat rolls and quail eggs.

Located on the 3rd level, Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant serves classic Cantonese cuisine in a refined setting, with choices spanning from casual dim sum and their signature Whole Roast Suckling Pig with Crêpe to treat-your-mother-in-law luxurious options such as Stewed Bird’s Nest with Egg White, Crab Meat and Caviar in Superior Soup and Crispy Guan Dong Sea Cucumber stuffed with Minced Iberico Pork and Asparagus in Abalone Sauce. During my stay, I tried their limited time Lobster & Sri Lankan Crab menu, with highlights including the Crispy Crab Meat Puff with Glass Noodle and Chinese Parsley which boasted a sweet crab filling juicy-wet like a soup reduction; the Sautéed Minced Lobster Meat with Shrimp Roe, Egg White and Diced Asparagus Lettuce which played like a modern elevated braised rice (mui fan); the Wok-Fried Lobster with Onion in Green Peppercorn Sauce which teased with a pleasant numbingness; and the uber-luxe and indulgent Baked Crab in Foie Gras and White Pepper Sauce which would have you hunting for the rich cubes of foie gras amidst the crispy landscape.

Set behind an unmarked entrance during operational hours (save for the Asia’s 50 Best Bars-awarded signage next to the doorway) is Prohibition-style speakeasy The Other Room, which specialises in novel reimaginings of classic cocktails in a sophisticated, intimate space more typical of an independent bar than a hotel one. Notable cocktails include the Clover Club-inspired Butterfly Club and the earl-grey infused Negroni Time which is quaintly served in a tea cup.

The airy and spacious Lobby Lounge offers the classic tiered afternoon tea experience along with all-day beverages and light bites such as cakes, pastries and sandwiches, many of which are also available via adjacent takeaway concept Java+. Rounding up the F&B concepts are two Japanese restaurants on the ground level: the Michelin-starred Singapore offshoot of Ginza Sushi Ichi which offers edomae-style sushi via both set and omakase course meal formats as well as its sister tempura concept Ginza Tenharu.

M CLUB

Situated next to the pool on the 5th level, M Club serves morning breakfast as well as evening cocktails and canapes. Playing it decidedly business hotel lounge-esque in its stylings, the space boasts various seating arrangements, from strategically-placed tables near the buffet line and window-side seats overlooking the idyllic pool area to tables within a beautiful octagonal pavilion with a soaring ceiling which also happens to house the bar. As the skies darken at the close of the evening, the lounge comes alive with the buzz of sparkling (and often alcohol-enhanced) conversations around you which somehow never overwhelms your own, and I am pleasantly surprised by how intimate and comfortable the vibes are in a club lounge within a hotel that is located right in the heart of Orchard.

Breakfast offerings overlap with what is available at the busier buffet line at Crossroads Cafe – think Nasi Goreng Istimewa, Lamb Rendang, Soto Ayam and Paratha. In comparison, the evening presentation is a substantially more elaborate affair comprising light bites such as Samosa, Assorted Sushi, Tauhou Salad, Chicken Katsu Bun, Cendol Cake, Green Tea Chestnut Cake and Chocolate Trifle alongside heartier fare such as Butter Rice, Curry Chicken and Beef Stew.

In terms of booze, the M Club serves a variety of red and white wines, with Scavi & Ray Prosecco being the bubbly of choice. The bar also serves free-flow cocktails such as the rather festive bourbon-based Autumn Reverie and the refreshing tequila-based Citrus Ember alongside classics such as Singapore Sling and Vodka Martini. My favourite was the luscious and spirit-forward Barrel-aged Negroni, served with a single ice cube just the way I like.

The selections at the evening buffet spread occasionally refresh (during my visit, the curry chicken was replaced by the beef stew halfway through the session), so always check back from time to time.

CONCLUSION

I am always pleasantly surprised by my stays at the Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel. Despite its business travel leanings, my lodgings were comfortable, the calming resort vibes at the swimming pool were truly relaxing and the evening cocktail offerings at the M Club were even better than I remember (although the former four hour alcohol duration is sorely missed – only JW Marriott Singapore South Beach can scratch that itch now). A perfect staycation destination.
