Why you should | The hotel is directly linked to Raffles City Shopping Centre, connected to different MRT lines (NSL, EWL and CCL) via City Hall MRT Station and Esplanade MRT, and with sheltered access to Marina Square, Millenia Walk and Suntec City. Fantastic location.
Fairmont Singapore and sister hotel Swissotel The Stamford are two of the city’s most popular hotels by virtue of their height and private balconies (a rarity in Singapore), with some rooms offering phenomenal views, especially during Formula One season. The hotel offers two distinct room designs: purple and Peranakan-style, and contemporary with wood and leather accents. The Fairmont Gold King belongs to the latter category, meshing masculine dark woods with cool marble and leather accents. Guests are able to control the curtains and lighting from various control panels around the room, likely a frequently-used function given how visible your in-room activities are from the balconies of nearby rooms. The pantry is fitted with a brilliant filtered water dispenser capable of filling your glass with either hot or cold water. Elsewhere, the sexy marble bathroom offers a spacious rainfall shower area, a single vanity with light-framed mirror, Le Labo bathroom amenities and one of the best uses of relaxed lighting in a bathroom that I’ve come across. The Fairmont Gold Lounge is one of Singapore’s best club lounges in terms of food offerings, especially during evening cocktail service. The a la minute Singapore Style Omelette served during breakfast was a terrific and brilliant reverse carrot cake (i.e. an egg dish with radish cake cubes) , while evening cocktails comprised dishes such as gnocchi from a live pasta station, Teriyaki Chicken Skewer, Seafood Croquette, Vegetable Samosa with Mint Sauce and the daringly spicy Beef Rendang Pie, paired with Champagne Henriot and a selection of wines and spirits. |
Why you shouldn’t | While breakfast is usually served at the ground level Italian restaurant Prego, the hotel’s high occupancy means a second venue, Asian Market Cafe, will often be opened for breakfast service as well (as was the case during my stay). Both venues are likely to be queue-tastic, stressful and thankless affairs (less Prego and more pray don’t go). Personally, I’d skip the hassle and head straight to the basement level of Raffles City Shopping Centre or the nearby Purvis Street for my morning fix.
Those seeking privacy and a restful stay may not enjoy the people-centric mega-hotel atmosphere of Fairmont Singapore and Swissotel The Stamford, both of which share common wellness and fitness facilities such as the swimming pools, fitness centres and the sprawling Willow Stream Spa. |
Miscellaneous information | The hotel rooms are fitted with those dreaded refrigerators from the days of yore with sensors that automatically charge for removed items and without space for your personal items. |
