Ayam penyet. I first discovered Waroeng Penyet when it was a very successful eatery at Marine Parade. When they moved to Joo Chiat, I faithfully followed. I even sought out the Kuala Lumpur branch when I was there! And when the Joo Chiat outlet closed down and the last remaining outlet in Singapore would be in a food court in IMM, I have made – and continue making – treacherous treks there. Why? Because the chilli is really, really good. It’s not numbingly or single-mindedly spicy like some ayam penyet chilli can be. Instead, it is spicy but also memorable and flavourful. I could eat the chilli with crackers or even white rice and consider it an amazing meal! I’m frankly very upset at the prospect of Waroeng Penyet ever ceasing business entirely in Singapore so this is a call to arms – for lovers of ayam penyet, spicy food or people simply looking for cheap and good food in the West, please give the ayam penyet at Waroeng Penyet a try. Support the awesome. Its cute chicken mascot would thank you muchly. 4.3/5
